Art Agora

Art Agora was conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic, at a time when there was an increased sense of isolation within the community. There was a shrinking of physical spaces that enabled spontaneous conversations, planned gatherings or serendipitous meetings. Our longing for connection was channeled through devices and mobile apps that were designed for us as consumers. There was a lack of digital spaces where we could come together and connect with one another as fellow citizens and residents.
Art Agora was a new digital commons with the objective of bringing together residents of Nanaimo through shared creativity. This project was commissioned by the City of Nanaimo through a collaboration between Nanaimo Parks Recreation and Culture and the Temporary Public Art Program.
A series of monthly activations (from March to August) engaged residents of Nanaimo in a creative project. Each of these projects brought out a unique perspective and a different craft. The best projects were showcased on Art Agora's website.

	Cooperating
System

Cooperating System is a TV show with AI and human actors. It de-familiarizes the popular notion of AI as an invisible, all-knowing force built on values of efficiency and scale. It introduces AI actors whose intelligence is informed through actions of care, embodiment and self-reflection. Humans and AI co-habit in slice-of-life situations where they live as independent beings and forge relationships that can be deep and meaningful but can also be messy and adversarial.

The screenplay of this show is self-reflexive in that it extends its conventional role as a program for humans. This instance of the script has been customized, updated and re-purposed as memorabilia for an ardent fan and supporter, who in turn, has chosen these snippets to showcase some of the most monumental scenes from the series.

A Retrospective

In this installation, I have alienated myself from my work and looked at it from the eyes of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The resultant artwork has been developed in collaboration with the algorithm, where I’ve allowed it to generate insights on my work. In turn, I’ve used those insights to further re-interpret the work. My relationship with AI has developed over time, starting from a place of fear and paranoia and growing into an alliance of conditional acceptance, negotiation and occasional empathy.

I’ve chosen four artifacts from my body of work; a photograph taken from a pinhole camera, an abstract ceramic sculpture, a fragment of a process-based sculpture and pieces of electronics and related components from my prototyping tool-kit. The artifacts have been chosen to highlight the inadequacies in the predictive models inbuilt within AI. These discrepancies bring forth a dissonance between what is perceived directly by looking at the artifact versus what is perceived through the mediation of AI.

The viewer is instructed to access the installation through the interface of the smartphone. The voice of the algorithm is coupled with animated visual expressions to convey AI’s understanding of the artifact. The visual expression incorporates fragments of a woman’s body to reflect not only my own frame as a woman artist but also the experiences of AI that is learning from an internet replete with images of women’s bodies.

Merry
Christmas

End of democracy? or a new start? This project uses Christmas tree as a medium to reflect the multiplicity
of voices post the 2016 US Presidential election.
Gradually, each christmas ornament
transforms into people's voices. Finally, the Christmas tree transforms
into a collection of multiple voices. Then all those voices melt into one - a little girl's voice about a freedom of speech
regardless of race, age, and gender. When her speech inflames the crowds,
everything starts burning.

The meaning of burning remains ambiguous to us - end of democracy
or a new start?

	Concrete
Measures

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University is the only building designed by Le Corbusier in the North American continent. It is also a semi-public space where the private sphere of education gets interspersed with the public sphere of galleries, exhibitions, screenings and talks.
Corbusier had designed the
building so that the private and the public could overlap and intermingle throughout the space. One such area in the
building is the exterior exhibition space of the building. This space is slightly below ground level and is used very little
today. The concrete bench in this space is cold and stiff not only from its own materiality but also from the lack of human
contact. Over time this bench has developed bruises and scars that have not been paid attention to. This intervention tries
to treat those injuries through actions of care and healing.

Public Nomadic
24 Hours

As the common property of all the citizens, public space is a social space that is generally open and accessible to people. However, insititutions which should take the responsibility of safeguarding this common property gradually turn to taking charge of the space.

A common way of controlling public space is to program various activities that impose limits upon how the space could be used. In the Science Center Plaza, food trucks and retail vendors occupy the space for their business profits with the permission of some legal insititutions which have ‘the right’ to develop and implement the rules and regulations of public space.

The issue addressed here deals with this invisible authority vis-à-vis civil rights in public space. How do people understand these two notions? What are their rights and obligations in the public sphere? What should be allowed and what should be restriced and limited? Who has the right to decide what should be done and what should not in the public space? By creating a problematic situation for people to participate in, we use public art to raise these questions.

We set up two tents in the Plaza for one full day from morning to night. We placed a placard on the tent mentioning that people could inhabit the tent after signing the necessary paperwork. We faked paperwork to make the occupation of the tent in the public space seem legally sanctioned. The paperwork consisted of a lease document titled “Harvard University Public Space Lease”, which was a photoshopped version of the actual Harvard University Housing Lease. Other documents included a master plan which showed the location and boundary of this temporary territory and an information sheet about the details of this property.
1) Step one: choose a public nomadic space to occupy
2) Step two: apply and sign a 'legal' document.

How much time do we spend reflecting upon death and the processes of dying and aging? Acknowledgement of
our own mortality would encourage
us to make more responsible choices about the legacy that we leave behind for others.

In contrast, how much time do we spend browsing on social media and other online sites? What percentage
of our online lives and connections are truly meaningful to us? A digital life that is authentic to one’s core
values would leave behind a trail of memories that would more closely reflect our personalities and principles. Our digital
lives have actual physical locations and reside in storage devices across the globe. The bodily presence of our
data is contained in data centers owned by technology companies and has an impact on the environment. How much of our digital memories do we want to retain and for whom? Should these memories remain
fossilized or should they gradually fade away with time? What are the economic and environmental costs
associated with maintaining these memories and for how long? Who gets ownership and control to access,
alter or gain from our digital afterlives?
This sculptural work encourages us to reflect upon these questions surrounding the digital legacies of our lives. It is titled 7 Memorials to my Afterlives in reference to the popular culture in India that talks about seven reincarnations for every person. It contains seven blocks of beeswax that resemble digital storage devices. These blocks are stacked over one another in the manner of warehouse storage practices of industrial sites. The different blocks offer different kinds of readings about the state of their temporal existence. Some of them have aged more than the others leaving visible stages of their mortality in the world.

	Who am I

I picked up a set of discarded filing cabinets from the Recycling Center. Some of these filing cabinets gradually aggregated into a new form. The growth process started from a linear configuration that slowly evolved into a more grotesque, organic form.
This ‘creature’ developed a new skin and was searching for its identity. Even as it had been emptied out of its past memories, it spoke to itself and tried to remember bits and pieces from its previous life. It would construct itself by putting together its memories but suddenly collapse back into a state of disintegration. Yet, it would rise again and try to build its sense of being. This process of synthesis and dissolution would continue through acts of remembering, forgetting and projecting its desires onto its past.

stop looking at me!

if you really want to engage, then why don't you pay attention.. i have things to share .. lately i’ve been getting these dreams.. and then sometimes i dream of other dreams.. how do i know that they are dreams and not real memories? maybe because in my dreams i can clearly see those memories.. but i dont feel in it my skin.. there is no visceral response to those memories.. anyway i'm rambling..

maybe you should help me.. help me make meaning of these memories.. i remember some things clearly..
what was the big fuss about ?.. everybody kept looking for corel word perfect.. then there was this smart system.. ohh! what a nightmare.. and then students!.. what was it? learn while you ? nooo.. earn while you learn.. all the ruckus it created.. aye aye aye..

am i the only one who gets such dreams? .. in which there are these other dreams that keep repeating themselves.. its funny that these dreams .. that I see again and again.. they reinforce themselves.. i remember them more clearly.. others just seem to slip away..
the other day i saw the same thing .. corel word perfect.. it just keeps appearing in all sorts of places.. this time it was with .. human resources for dummies…. the ad flyer.. it was awkward to see them together.. but you know in a dream even the most unimaginable things start making perfect sense.. ha ha ha

i know what you are thinking? i can feel it.. yeah..you are kind of bored already.. i’m sorry i’m going on and on with my gibberish.. i just need to talk to someone.. just to clear my mind.. i wont take much more time.. i promise..
so where was I?. sorry.. i think i lost my chain of thoughts.. aaaa… what was i about to say.. shhhhhhhhhhh.. ahhhhhhhh.. anyway.. guess it will come back to me in a while.. there were these other things in my dream yesterday.. they are more like passing dreams.. like shadows that linger about but never really take a tangible form.. things like Smartstaff, ATLOT, 21st, PS1, OT,19/w4.. and they were more.. like.. AB..W..
oh yess!.. i am diverting again… but NOWW i remember.. i remember what i was trying to say earlier.. yes.. the last thing i wanted to discuss with you.. i think this is important.. i was wondering.. why am i even wasting so much time thinking and intellectualizing over these dreams.. do they even mean anything?
of course, they do! The fact that I’m obsessing over them so much and they’re affecting me so deeply.. isn’t that reason enough to try and make sense of them.
